The honor 5X makes its way to Canada and changes its name to Huawei GR5
The honor 5X is a great phone, and you know what they say about a rose by any other name. The honor 5X, which was announced back at CES 2016 and launched in the U.S. in January, has changed its name as it finally crosses the border into Canada. In the U.S. it is known as the honor 5X, but in the Great White North it shall henceforth be known as the Huawei GR5.

The reasons aren’t actually all that mysterious. honor is a sub-brand of Huawei after all, one aimed squarely at the young and fun and sporty, but Huawei is clearly more intent on building brand recognition in Canada for itself rather than for a sub-brand. Call it what you like, the Huawei GR5 is, for all intents and purposes, the honor 5X, so if you Canucks had yearnings for that phone earlier this year, you’re in luck.
Rogers Wireless is stocking the Huawei GR5 and offering it for nothing upfront on a two-year contract or for $375 CAD outright. The Huawei GR5 is packing a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS LCD display, Snapdragon 616 SoC, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB ROM with microSD expansion up to 128 GB, 13 MP primary shooter with 5 MP selfie cam, 3,000 mAh battery and Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box with a planned Marshmallow update.

The Huawei GR5 features an all-metal housing and Huawei’s outstanding fingerprint sensor mounted on the back. Not a bad deal for $375. An even better deal though is to pick up the actual honor 5X from Newegg in Canada, which has it for just $249.99 CAD. It’s the unlocked GSM version with a U.S. warranty, but as long as you check the bands with your carrier for compatibility, it’s a much better deal than Rogers’ “Staff Pick”.
Will you be picking up the Huawei GR5 or the honor 5X?
