The best wireless security cameras to protect your home in 2022

It’s great to be able to crawl into bed at night and know your home is more secure. We’re not talking about full-on laser grids or guard dogs, but a little added protection goes a long way. That’s why we’ve set out to make a list of the best wireless security cameras currently available. We also have a separate list of the best smart security cameras in general — including wired ones — which you can check out via the link below.

Wireless cameras are great if you have a reliable Wi-Fi setup and you don’t mind changing or recharging batteries every so often. This list includes both indoor and outdoor models, so everyone should find something that suits their needs.

The best wireless security cameras:

Editor’s note: We will update our list of the best wireless security cameras as new options launch.

Arlo Pro 4

Arlo’s Pro 4 is an amazing camera system with 2K resolution and HDR, making clear images possible in just about any lighting condition. To that end it has color night vision and an integrated spotlight, the latter something companies often charge extra for. Battery life is about six months depending on usage.

It can connect directly to Wi-Fi, although you will need a compatible Arlo hub or base station if you want to use it with Apple HomeKit (it also supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant). Some features are reserved for Arlo Secure subscribers, including object recognition, activity zones, and cloud recording up to 30 days.

Blink Outdoor

The Blink Outdoor is a great option if you’re looking for a durable yet budget-priced exterior camera. It’s IP65 water-resistant, and lasts up to two years on just two AA batteries, since a lot of the heavy lifting is done by a sync module you plug into a wall outlet. If you don’t want to pay for a Blink cloud subscription, the Sync Module 2 supports local recording to a USB drive (make sure it’s blank first!). Another perk is its Early Notification option, which can trigger alerts the instant motion is detected.

Ring Stick Up Cam Battery

Ring security cameras are very popular. Amazon makes them, so they (and Blink products, for that matter) integrate very tightly with the Alexa ecosystem. Technically speaking the Stick Up Cam Battery isn’t the best Ring offers, but we believe it’s the superior option in terms of value. Design, functionality, and ease of use are great for what you’re paying.

The camera connects to Wi-Fi, needs no hub, and runs up to six months per charge. The unit is weather-resistant, so you won’t need to worry about rain. You will want a Ring Protect subscription, however, since there’s no other way to record video, and it also enables features like person detection and notifications with image previews.

Canary Flex

The Canary Flex is another hubless camera, and can be used both wired and wirelessly, including the rare option of 5GHz Wi-Fi in addition to 2.4GHz. Its name seems to stem from these things as well as its mount, which lets the camera swivel 360 degrees.

Just be aware that while it offers additional features like Alexa and Google Assistant, you’ll need a Canary Premium subscription for person detection and recording (up to 30 days, in the cloud).

Google Nest Cam (Battery)

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

The Nest Cam Battery works both indoors and outdoors, but is definitely meant for the latter, since it’s weatherproof and comes with a magnetic mount that allows easy installation and removal. If it loses Wi-Fi, it can keep recording for an hour.

Perhaps its best feature, however, is the ability to distinguish between people, animals, and vehicles, so you don’t have to waste time on irrelevant alerts. This is taken a step further with a Nest Aware subscription, which adds the ability to recognize familiar faces. You’ll also want Aware to extend event recording from three hours to 30 days.

As you might imagine, the Nest Cam is deeply integrated with Google platforms. You can stream video to your phone, a Chromecast, or any Google-equipped smart display. It will still work if you have an iPhone or iPad, mind.

Deep Sentinel

Deep Sentinel boosts security to the next level, since on top of using AI to identify threats, it includes a Live Guard service where trained professionals monitor your feeds and respond to incidents. Continuing that live service past the 30-day trial is very expensive, but could make all the difference in response time. If money is no object and you can’t always be near your smartphone, it’s worth a look.
