Sony Xperia Z2 camera overview (MWC 2014)

The Sony Xperia Z2 might feature the same 20.7MP camera as found on its predecessor, but that doesn’t mean the overall experience hasn’t improved. At MWC 2014 we took a closer look at the Xperia Z2’s camera and were quite impressed by just how quickly the camera loaded up and was ready to go. We can most likely attribute this speed up to an improved processor, more RAM and general camera software optimizations.

So how quick is the camera exactly? Opening the camera app and taking the first pic was a process that literally took just a few seconds. Aside from the camera’s speed, there’s also plenty of impressive options under settings including a burst with long press, Steady Shot technology for stabilizing videos and a touch capture feature. There’s even a way to use the volume up/down keys for zooming in and out.

Moving on to the camera’s modes, you’ll find features such as AR effect and Creative effects. While many of these modes are also found on the Xperia Z1, Sony has added several a few new modes such as 4K video support and Timeshift video. Sony is also working with 3rd party partners to allow you to find and install additional specialty camera features directly Xperia Z2’s viewfinder.

Overall, the Sony Xperia Z2’s camera might not be a massive departure from the Z1, but there are certainly a few welcome improvements that lend to an overall enhanced experience. While this was a fairly quick overview, we’ll be sure to bring you an even more detailed look at the Xperia Z2 and its camera via a full review sometime a bit later down the road. Also be sure to check out our MWC Xperia Z2 hands-on post for a look at some of the handset’s other features and our first impressions of the device.
