Samsung Knox isn't going anywhere, despite Android for Work's upcoming launch

At Google I/O we learned that Google was preparing to rollout a new Android at Work solution. Of even more interest was that fact that Samsung had contributed parts of its Samsung Knox code to the effort, in an attempt to create a more unified enterprise-level Android experience going forward.

At the time it was speculated by some that Samsung would be dropping its own Knox efforts, in favor of Android for Work. Yesterday a Forbes blogpost seemingly confirmed that Samsung was in fact throwing in the towel in favor of Google’s Knox-derived alternative. As it turns out, the statement from Forbes might have been a bit premature and inaccurate. Samsung has since issued a formal statement declaring that Knox is very alive and well, despite the fact that they contributed parts of Knox’s technology to Google’s Android for Work solution.

Samsung is committed to the long term evolution of mobile security and the ongoing development of Samsung KNOX. While Samsung is contributing a part of KNOX technology for the benefit of the entire Android community and enterprise customers, Samsung KNOX remains the most secure Android platform from the hardware to the application level. Samsung will continue to work with our partners to enable KNOX for all of our valued customers. Our list of enterprise and government clients continues to grow rapidly, and is a testament to our commitment to providing highly-desirable, secure mobile devices across all industries. Furthermore, Samsung continues to offer differentiated and highly valuable mobile enterprise services such as KNOX EMM and KNOX Marketplace to provide customers with the most secure and scalable mobility management solution.

Pretty straight-forward response: Knox will still continue to exist. It remains unclear whether it will be an option alongside Android for Work on future Galaxy devices, but we wouldn’t be too surprised if that was the case. It also seems likely that Knox could end up in future Tizen devices, if and when they ever arrive to the market.
