Pokemon Go increases GameStop sales by 100%

Pokemon Go may be a completely mobile and online game, but this doesn’t mean brick and mortar stores can’t get their piece of the pie. We know T-Mobile and Sprint are trying to lure more users to their stores, and sponsored locations are soon to come. Now GameStop is also trying to reap the benefits of a title that has over 20 million users by the Pokeballs.

...their sales have grown by 100% thanks to the Pokemon Go craze.

GameStop is proving to be successful at adopting the digital age, even as more customers start going to digital stores for content, as opposed to walking into a store to grab a physical copy. GameStop CEO Paul Raines recently spoke to CNBC and stated their sales have grown by 100% thanks to the Pokemon Go craze. But how are they accomplishing this with a game that runs purely online?

The key is that GameStop’s previous success is helping their locations become PokeStops and Gyms. This means a slew of stores across the country were able to host family events. Of course, this is bringing plenty of customers through their doors, and their merchandise seems to be flying off the shelves (especially Pokemon-related products).

“We surveyed our stores, and we had 462 stores — just this pass weekend — that are PokéStops or gyms. So we did some family events and our sales were up 100 percent in those stores. Of course, our Pokémon merchandise is up significantly across the board. We’re very happy to see all this excitement around Pokémon for what is traditionally a slower time of the year for gaming.” -Paul Raines, GameStop CEO

In addition, Raines claims Pokemon is already a franchise people associate GameStop with, as they are the biggest game-specific chain retailer in the world. He claims they are the largest distributor of Pokemon games and collectibles.
