Pebble app store arrives for iOS users, Android version coming soon
Starting as a massively successful Kickstarter campaign, the Pebble is arguably one of the most popular smartwatches available today, but it’s not without it’s shortcomings. In particular, it’s default functionality is rather limited. Up until now, expanding these functions on your Pebble required you to use third party websites, but the good news is that this is about to change.
As announced alongside the stylish new Pebble Steel at CES 2014, Pebble owners will soon be able to find all of their favorite smartwatch apps and watchfaces in one convenient location, thanks to the new Pebble app store. Even better news, it has now launched for iOS and is expected to arrive to Android “very,very soon”.
The Pebble app store is built-in to the existing Pebble app and is designed to make browsing it’s 1000+ collection of apps and watchfaces easy by implementing a ratings system and categorizing apps into several sections, including Fitness, Games, Remotes, Tools & Utilities and more.
Even more valuable to users will be the app store’s ability to manage apps on their Pebble smartwatch. To ensure an optimal experience, the watch is limited to eight installed apps at any time, making app management functionality ever crucial to users. In order to help this effort, there is a new locker system that will facilitate rapid loading and offloading of installed apps.
Although it’s a bit disappointing that Pebble was unable to launch both the iOS and Android version of the Pebble AppStore at the same time, we’re still very excited about what the Pebble appstore means for the future of the device and its brand.
Pebble has yet to give us a more specific launch date or time for the Android version, but we’ll be sure to let our readers know as soon as we receive word that the store is live for Android users is live.
