OnePlus One to feature a 13 Megapixel Sony Exmor camera

Hardware specs for the new OnePlus One smartphone have been slowly trickling out for the past few weeks, and this time we’re privy to the details of the handset’s main camera.

The OnePlus One will come with a Sony Exmor IMX214 image sensor. The reason for this particular choice is because, after some real-world testing, OnePlus feels that Sony offers the best wide-aperture sensors on the market right now. OnePlus went through virtually every camera module manufacturer on the market and tested out their latest sensors, before concluding that Sony would be the best choice for its smartphone.

The IMX214 is a 13 Megapixel sensor, with an aperture of f/2.0, which should make it a decent camera for taking pictures in low lighting conditions. OnePlus has also added its own unique six lens optics to the module.

Most smartphone cameras have five lenses, but OnePlus has opted for six lenses in the One’s camera, to help correct for the camera’s low aperture. This design should help remove any low aperture distortion, whilst enhancing the images quality and colors. As a side note, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S5 also features a six lens camera module.

Other camera features include Image Stabilization Plus (IS+), 4K video capture, and 120fps 720p video recording for those of you know want to capture some slow-motion footage. The handset will also ship with a 5 Megapixel front facing camera for video calls.
