NYTimes app for Android relaunches in the Play Store.
After testing its app on some 7-inch tablets, The New York Times has relaunched its dedicated application for Android devices. The app, which is now available for download through the Play Store features a responsive design and support for a wide range of tablets as well as smartphones. Having experimented by releasing the app for a limited number of tablets, the NYTimes’s Director of Mobile Products Alex Hardiman said that testing was fruitful in getting “helpful learnings.”
The NYTimes app for Android now features a new functionality called text-to-speech, which enables users to listen to their favorite articles using Google’s built-in voice search engine. It also works with other choices. When an article is being played, a menu appears at the bottom of the screen with pause and play controls. The app also features a playlist which can be used to add articles and listen them one by one.
While version 3.0 does not bring a large number of features to the app, it does make it compatible with the new range of tablets thanks to its new adaptive interface. The update gives a greater control to the user over how breaking news alerts are delivered. The top news section that appears in the top bar of the app displays a drop down menu which provides easy access to different sections of the site to the user including Politics, World, Blogs, Technology, Science, and more.
Furthermore, the NYTimes app version 3.0 also brings bug fixes and performance improvements to the app.
I have played the app for a few minutes and it works really smoothly. The interface is simple which makes it easier to concentrate on the content. The navigation is good too, as you can jump to the next article by simply swiping your finger from left to right and vice versa for going to the previous one.
