New Nexus 10 (2013) to be made by Asus, in stores for holidays – sources
Now Russell Holly of Geek.com claims that “multiple sources” confirmed to him that the upcoming Nexus 10 would actually be made by Asus. According to the report, the refreshed Nexus 10 will bear the same name as the original, just like the Nexus 7 (2013).
The device will supposedly be available in the Google Play Store and at Best Buy in time for holidays. The 2012 Nexus 10 launched in mid-November, so Google will probably go for the same period for the 2013 edition.
No information was revealed on the hardware and features of the Nexus 10 (2013), though we can probably expect a great hi-res display of 2560 x 1600, a Snapdragon 800 processor, and 2GB of RAM.
Who got it wrong?
Update: Amir Efrati got it wrong. He just tweeted that he meant “currently made by Samsung” in his original tweet, and that Sundar Pichai didn’t actually mention the manufacturer .
Both the WSJ’s Amir Efrati and Geek’s Russell Holly are trusted names in the technology media landscape, so we have to wonder who got it wrong. It’s hard to believe that Google changed its mind between July 25 and today, and with just a few months until launch, the Nexus 10 should already be in an advanced development stage by now.
An argument in favor of an Asus-made Nexus 10 is the great relationship between Google and Asus, but, then again, Samsung isn’t exactly at odds with Google either.
It’s possible that Sundar Pichai told Efrati that a new Nexus 10 is coming, and the journalist assumed it would be made by Samsung, but that’s just speculation at this point.
One thing’s for sure now – more leaks are bound to appear, as the experience of recent devices like the Nexus 7, Moto X, and LG G2 has taught us. Stay tuned.
Update – here’s an argument in favor of the Asus theory – the creators of the video that Google commissioned to promote the Nexus 7’s Surround Sound feature wrote on their portfolio page that the video was made for the launch of the new Nexus 7 and new Nexus 10. Having the same hardware feature on both Nexus tablets indicates that they are likely both made by the same manufacturer. (Thanks, tipster!)
