New Chromebook/Chromebox are available in BestBuy and Dixons stores
Despite the fact that first-generation Chromebooks have proven to be, let’s be honest, an utter and complete failure, Google seems to be still trusting the project and has unveiled and launched a second-generation device, alongside Samsung, a month back.
The new Series 5 550 Chromebook was joined by a Series 3 Chromebox and, although some complained about the gadgets’ pricing, they looked pretty good on paper, coming with some serious power under their hoods. But while lack of power was a major cause of the original Chromebooks’ failure, another contributing factor was Google’s poor marketing of the devices and the limited availability, both online and in retail stores across the US.
Now, on the other hand, you can’t possibly complain of being unable to find the new Chromebook and Chromebox, as they have been made available online for several weeks and are now hitting some physical stores, too.
A hundred select Best Buy locations in the US are reported as selling the Series 5 550 Chromebook and the Series 3 Chromebox and, while we don’t have a complete list at hand with all these stores, you can go over to this link and find a Chrome OS-running device near you.
British tech enthusiasts are themselves invited to this availability spread “party”, with Dixons locations also having the new Chromebox and Chromebook in shelves starting yesterday. Unfortunately, we don’t know the number of Dixons stores that have them available or their locations, so you’ll have to get on the phone with one of the electronics retailers’ customer support representatives to find out if there’s such a store somewhere near you.
If you prefer ordering either one of the devices online, you have a lot of options at the moment, mostly in the US. Amazon, Newegg and BestBuy are all selling both the Series 5 550 and the Series 3 Chromebox in the virtual space and there’s no word of supply issues with any of the two devices, like it has happened in the past with the original Chromebooks.
The pricing hasn’t yet budged from what was announced back in May, so you’ll still have to pay $329.99 for the Chromebox, $449.99 for the Wi-Fi only version of the new Chromebook, or $549.99 for the 3G model, no matter if you choose to get the devices online or from physical stores.
