MTV app puts Catfish in your pocket

MTV has released a new app that will let you watch all the pregnant teenager reality shows you could want on you Android phone, as long as you subscribe to cable.

The new MTV app lets you watch recent episodes of shows like Catfish and Teen Wolf on your Android phone, if you have a cable subscription. The app works similarly to HBO GO, you sign into the app using your cable provider information, and the app shows you all the content that’s available. Except instead of Game of Thrones you get reality shows about tricking people on the Internet and random people living in an apartment together.

The app isn’t completely useless if you lack a cable subscription, or if your cable provider doesn’t have the proper partnership with Viacom. In both cases the app will showcase content that’s available on MTV.com, giving users an easy portal to all the clips they could want from the network. Or all the clips they don’t want because they don’t subscribe to cable.

Those who do have cable, and who watch MTV regularly on their couch at the appointed time for their favorite shows will get the most out of the app. The MTV app is a second-screen companion for primetime shows on the network, letting fans see behind-the-scenes info about their shows, view show-specific Twitter feeds, and interact with the network via polls and quizzes. The app even (GASP!) lets you find out what music is playing in premiere episodes. That’s right, MTV still cares about music.

Before you ask, no, the app doesn’t seem to have a dedicated section for music videos. That’s what Vevo and YouTube are for, and they’re both much better at it.

Do you see yourself using the new MTV app? Or did you already ditch your cable subscription?
