Mad Catz M.O.J.O micro-console includes Tegra 4 CPU and Google Play

The long-term appeal of Android micro-consoles might still be in question, but for now, there’s clearly a market for Android game systems. While devices like the Ouya and Gamestick go after the low-end market, Nvidia currently targets the mobile gamer with the high-end Shield. Is there room for more Android-powered game consoles? Mad Catz seems to think so.

Back in June, the accessory maker announced that its so-called Project M.O.J.O. would not only be powered by Android but would even offer Google Play right out of the box. Fast-fowarding to today, we now have specs, a release date and pricing.

According to Mac Catz, the M.O.J.O. will be heading our way on December 10th for a price of $249.99, and is available for pre-order immediately. While the MOJO’s asking price is over double that of the Ouya, it also offers considerably better hardware.

The MOJO is powered by a 1.8GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 T40S CPU, has 2GB of RAM and features HDMI out capabilities with a 1080p resolution. Other specs include 16GB internal storage, microSD with support for up to 128GB SDXC cards, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and 2 USB ports. There’s also Android 4.2.2 with the previously promised Google Play support.

Is the increase in specs and inclusion of “full Android” worth the extra money? It depends on what you are looking for. If you like the idea of a full-powered Android living room device for your multimedia, entertainment, browsing and gaming needs – then the MOJO could be a perfect fit for you. For those that already have smart TVs or another set top box, a device like the Ouya might be a better choice.

Interestingly enough, the MOJO is also rumored to be adding support for PC games in a manner similar to the Nvidia Shield. While Mad Catz has yet to confirm or deny such a feature, we have reached out for comment and will update if we hear back. For now, we’ll take that particular claim with a grain of salt.

Based on what Mad Catz has officially announced about the M.O.J.O., are you interested or do you feel that $250 is just way too much for an Android gaming device?
