Introducing the Font of Ice Cream Sandwich - Roboto

With the introduction of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the Galaxy Nexus, there’s quite a few things to take in. Google has really worked on getting a UI that will appeal to those that happen to interact with an Ice Cream Sandwich device for the first time – ardent Android fans or not. One of the things they plan on doing that with is called Roboto.

Unlike anything new you would expect from a new software update, or rather, upgrade, as we would say – quite simply, Roboto is a font. Every piece of text has a font, a style to the appearance a particular character has. Here in ICS, Roboto is more than just a typeface where a tablet software transitions to a mobile celluar device; Roboto is a whole new aesthetic concept applied to giving Android 4.0 a completely updated and refreshed look.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was designed with simplicity in mind, and thanks to Roboto, Android takes many steps forward in achieving this simplicity. Roboto can be described as a font with a dual nature, being both modern and sensible, but also “emotional” at the same time. It’s hard to describe what Roboto really looks like, but upon first glance, you’ll see what they’re really up to; and they’re right. There is a clean and geometric design within the entire OS. Each icon and widget, some of which seemed to be derived from Honeycomb, flow well on the screen and to the eyes of the user.

Roboto isn’t merely a new font. It’s a concept of simplicity, modernity and elegance molded in one new typeface we can all grow to love. How about you? Do you like what you see? Also, if you’r interested in downloading the Roboto typeface for your computer, you can download it here!
