HTC smartphone president Chialin Chang resigns

TL;DR

  • Chialin Chang, President of Smartphone and Connected Devices Business at HTC, has resigned.
  • HTC said it is a personal career move, while media reports indicate Chang intends to launch an AI startup in the future.
  • The move arrives soon after HTC posted its worst revenues for 13 years.

HTC’s President of Smartphone and Connected Devices Business, Chialin Chang, has resigned. HTC announced the move on its investors page earlier today and it’s effective immediately, though Chang’s successor is yet to be named.

Chang joined HTC as its Chief Financial Officer in 2012 before becoming the smartphone and connected devices president in 2016. HTC’s website lists Chang’s reason for leaving as “personal career path,” while reports suggest he plans to launch an AI startup later this year.

January earnings for HTC are in, and they are not good

News

HTC has fallen on hard times recently; its 2017 revenues were the lowest they’d been in 13 years, and only last week the company reported a year-on-year revenue decline of 27% from January 2016 to 2017.

HTC’s future smartphone prospects also look bleak as Google recently acquired 2,000 members of its R&D staff (and access to some of its patents) in a $1.1 billion deal.

In a statement to Engadget on the matter, HTC said:

We can confirm Chialin Chang has resigned from his position as President of the Smartphone and Connected Devices Business at HTC. We thank him for his dedication to the company for the last six years and wish him well in his future endeavors.

HTC’s position in the smartphone arena remains on shaky ground—take a look at what we expect from it this year here.
