How to Update the Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 to Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread XWJVU

Ever wanted to equip your Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread? With the official release of Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread (build XWJVU) for Portugal market, it is now possible. Its default language is Portuguese, but that can be changed to English by choosing it in the “Locale & Text” option in the Settings. Please bear in mind that this update is only possible for users with device numbers like GT I9000 and not other models like I9000M/B or T.

Before proceeding to the update, it is important to follow the preparatory instructions below to facilitate a smoother and safer firmware update. Otherwise, it’s possible to mess up or brick your phone.

General Preparations

  • Make sure that you have the latest version of Samsung KIES installed on your computer.
  • Also ensure that you have the latest version of the .NET framework.
  • Back up all the data on your phone so it can easily be restored in the event of your phone’sbeing bricked.
    • Text Messages – Use the SMS Backup and Restore app
    • Phone Contacts – Sync with Gmail application
    • Call Log – Use the Call Logs Backup and Restore app
    • Pictures, music, videos, files, etc. – Copy to the internal/external SD card
    • Internet & MMS Settings – Backup all the settings from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names”
  • Enable USB debugging, which can be found through the path “Settings > Applications >Development > USB Debugging”.
  • You should have admin privileges, together with full USB Read/Write access so that data can be read/written from/to the phone.

Rooting Information

It’s not necessary to root your phone to update to this firmware. You can apply this to a non-rooted phone.  Just in case you have rooted your phone, the root privileges will be revoked after applying this update and your lost warranty will have been regained.

If You’re on Custom ROM or Firmware

If you are using any custom ROM for your phone, then you must first turn off your phone and enter into Recovery Mode. You can enter into Recovery Mode by pressing the Volume Up key + OK Button, and holding both down while pressing the Power Button.

In Recovery Mode, select the “Advanced” Option and disable any “Voodoo” options. You will need to clear the battery stats, too. Once done, select “Go Back” and choose the following options: “Wipe data/factory reset”, “Wipe Cache partition”, and then select “Reboot Phone Now”. This step clears all of the additional tools installed on your phone.

Instructions for Updating

If all requirements have been met, we may now proceed to updating your Samsung GT I9000 with Gingerbread 2.3.5 XWJVU.

  • Download the Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread (build XWJVU) update package to your computer.  Get it here (about 184 MB).
  • Extract the ZIP file to your computer.  As soon as the files are extracted, you will find three files. “JVU_JV4_JVT.tar”, “Odin3 v1.85.zip” and “SS_DL.dll”.  If any of these three files are missing, you will need to re-download the file.
  • Extract the contents of Odin3 v1.85.zip into a folder.
  • Open the Odin3 flash tool inside the folder where you extracted it to.
  • Turn off your phone and enter into Download Mode by pressing the Volume Down key + OK Button and holding down both while pressing the Power button.
  • In the event the phone boots up into normal mode, try the process again. If you cannot enter into Download Mode, it’s not recommended to proceed.
  • Once in Download Mode, connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable.
  • As soon as the device is connected, with Odin3 opened, you will see the Odin3 ID:COM section turn yellow. This means that the drivers that are required for this firmware update have been successfully updated. You are now ready to proceed.
  • In Odin3, click PDA and select “JVU_JV4_JVT.tar” from the folder where you extracted the update files to.
  • Click on “Start” to begin the firmware update. Please note that you should not interrupt the firmware update or else you may face issues, such as your phone not turning on.
  • Once the update has been completed, the device will restart. You will be asked to enter Google account credentials, as well as Language preferences. After entering them, turn the device off and enter into Recovery Mode. You can do this by pressing Volume UP + OK Button and holding both down while pressing the Power Button.
  • Once in Recovery Mode, select “Wipe Data/Factory Reset” and “Wipe Cache Partition” to clear your cache.
  • Afterwards, choose “Reboot System Now” to restart your phone normally.
  • Congratulations!  Your Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 is now equipped with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread (build XWJVU) firmware.
