How to Automount USB Disks on the Galaxy Nexus
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus has been hailed as the latest and the greatest device in the Android world. It’s been receiving rave reviews and for good reason. This device boasts one of the key features few other phones have. Have you ever wanted to transfer files from and to your Samsung Galaxy Nexus without having to go through your computer? It’s definitely possible with the Galaxy Nexus’ USB On-the-Go feature, one of the exciting gems of Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0).
For users who’ve noticed this function and have tried it out, there’s been a lot of disappointment. Unfortunately, at this time, Google has disabled mounting USB Mass Storage devices on the Galaxy Nexus. Though there are reports that Google will finally be enabling this feature in the next update, XDA-Developer forum member and recognized developer Chainfire has come to our rescue by releasing StickMount, an app that allows you to automatically mount and unmount your USB Mass Storage devices with your Galaxy Nexus.
StickMount gives you the ability to go around this limitation and to mount external storage devices, such as flash drives and external hard drives without any problem. Soon you’ll be transferring data directly into and from your phone without even having to turn on your computer. Does your friend have a song she’d like to share with you but neither of you has a laptop within arm’s reach? No problem! If you’ve got StickMount installed on your Galaxy Nexus, you can directly move the files that you need.
You’ll need a rooted Galaxy Nexus for this app to work, as well as ICL53F firmware or newer. After you’ve installed it on your phone, connect the USB Mass Storage Device to the phone via the USB Host / On-The-Go (OTG) cable. A prompt should automatically appear, asking you if you’d like to open StickMount.
If you don’t find this working, however, the problem might be your OTG cable. If your USB device has a light (LED indicator) installed, it should activate when you’ve connected it to your Galaxy Nexus. If you install the app after you’ve already connected a USB Mass Storage Device, you will need to either manually launch the app or reconnect the USB Mass Storage Device.
Though StickMount only currently supports disks formatted as FAT partitions, this app is more than enough to comfort us until Google addresses this limitation.
