Hangouts update fixes MMS bug
A new update to Hangouts for Android brings a number of fixes to how the app handles SMS and group messages.
The update brings Hangouts to version 2.0.2, and doesn’t add any major features, but does seek to make the app more usable for users. Some users reported trouble sending and receiving MMS messages through Hangouts. This version should fix those issues, making it a more reliable app for text messaging.
Hangouts 2.0.2 also adds the ability to turn off MMS for group messages. By default group messages use MMS to send the same messages to a number of people at the same time, creating a thread for multiple people. Some users prefer to use group messaging to simply send the same message to different people, starting a thread for each person. This version lets users do that by giving them the option to turn off MMS for group messages.
Google added the ability to use Hangouts for SMS with version 2.0 of the app. It is the default messaging app in Android 4.4 KitKat, handling both Hangout chats and SMS chats.While the app consolidates messaging into a single app, it is not without flaws, The app doesn’t make it easy to distinguish between Hangout chats and SMS chats, and stores the two as separate threads for each person. This update doesn’t fix that issue, and it’s not clear if Google views it as an issue.
Of course, users can also choose to use any number of other apps for SMS if they don’t like Hangouts. Most manufacturers ship their own messaging apps on their phones, and there’s a plethora of options available in the Google Play Store.
