Google is shutting down Inbox in March
TL;DR
- Google launched Inbox by Gmail almost four years ago with innovative features not found in Gmail.
- The company has announced that it will stop supporting Inbox in March of 2019.
- Google suggests users start using Gmail again which now features most of the tools originally found in Inbox.
When Google launched the Inbox by Gmail email client in October of 2014, it was a place for the search giant to experiment and test out new and innovative features. But after the company brought over most of the app’s various features to the redesign Gmail, many questioned the client’s future. As expected, Google has now announced that it will end support for Inbox in March of 2019 (via FastCompany).
When Inbox launched, Google introduced and implemented new features such as email bundling and snoozing. This added functionality pulled a good number of users away from Gmail as they added to the email experience without combining the usual headaches caused by using third-party email clients.
As mentioned, pretty much all of Inbox’s unique features moved over to Gmail back in April. At the time, Google released a statement telling users not worry about the future of Inbox. The company claimed that it had no plans to change its email client and saw it as a place to continue testing innovative features. Five months later, though, and Google looks to have changed its mind.
One Inbox by Gmail feature that still hasn’t made its way over to the standard Gmail service is the email bundling. Google claims this is in the works, but did not give an official timeline as to when to expect the feature.
