Galaxy S4 delayed due to Exynos 5 Octa issues, Qualcomm chips in the picture second report says
The Galaxy S2, S3, and Note 2 all use various versions of the Exynos 4 chip.
At the time, we wondered if it’s possible for Samsung to completely take Exynos chips out of the equation – after all the company has other powerful SoCs in the Exynos in addition to the newly launched Exynos 5 Octa – and rely solely on new Qualcomm processors.
We don’t have a definitive answer to that question yet, but we do have a secondary report today that seems to confirm the former. That is, if the second one is not based on the first one in the first place.
This time around we have Piper Jaffray analyst Gus Richard talking about the Samsung-Qualcomm business relationship in view of the Galaxy S4 launch.
Richard says basically the same things: that the Exynos 5 Octa has issues that determined Samsung to postpone the launch of the Galaxy S4 and look at Qualcomm for chips, a business decision that will benefit the latter:
“We believe Samsung’s Galaxy S4 has slipped and the Galaxy S3 has been in production a quarter longer than expected,” writes Richard. “We believe the S4 is being delayed primarily due to power issues with the company’s eight-core Exynos Octa […] we believe the company is likely to shift more to external sources. We believe QCOM will pick up more of Samsung’s S4 business.”
Analysts don’t always get it right and we’ll have to wait for the product to become official before we can draw up any conclusion. Samsung will surely not admit that there’s anything wrong with the Exynos 5 Octa, and will surely offer a different explanation in case Qualcomm will indeed be providing the Galaxy S4 chips.
Finally, we will remind you that not so long ago, another report revealed that a Samsung official confirmed anonymously that the Galaxy Note 3 will have the Exynos 5 Octa under the hood, and at the time we wondered why the Galaxy S4 wasn’t mentioned either. After all wouldn’t execs with inside information ready to spill some beans on the company’s future products also mention one of the hottest upcoming devices in case said device were to come with an Exynos 5 Octa CPU?
