Chrome OS updates will now come even quicker

TL;DR

  • Today, Google announced that Chrome OS updates will soon come at a quicker pace.
  • Chrome OS users can expect a new update every four weeks starting in the fourth quarter of this year.
  • This schedule will match the new schedule for the Chrome browser itself.

Chrome OS gets better (and more popular) with every passing year. One of the big reasons for that is Google’s pretty swift schedule of updates for the desktop operating system.

Interestingly, this announcement comes on the heels of a prior announcement that the Chrome browser itself would have a four-week update schedule. That schedule starts in Q3 2021. In other words, by the end of this year, both the Chrome browser and Chrome OS would see monthly updates.

Because of this matching schedule, Google is actually going to skip one of the expected Chrome OS updates. Google will jump from build M94 straight to M96, skipping over M95. You can see the updated schedule here.

Do note that this new schedule does not apply to enterprise and education systems. Those systems will have a schedule of one update every six months. Google promises more details on this soon.
