Bluetooth-powered Noke brings the padlock into the 21st century

A typical padlock tends to use one of two methods for granting access to a person: a key, or through the use of a combination. For those looking for a 21st century solution, the Noke instead turns to Bluetooth LE technology. This means you no longer need to keep a physical key around or remember a combination. Even better, the second you click on the Noke it automatically looks for a device with a compatible wireless ‘key’ and opens up without you ever having to take out your phone.

We have to admit, this is a pretty cool idea and the Noke itself looks rather sleek and attractive (… for a lock). The catch is that the device isn’t readily available, though its creators are actively seeking funding on Kickstarter. Right now they have received $4,181 in pledges out of its $100,000 goal, with 30 days left to go. It’s important to note this isn’t the first attempt for such a lock, with a similar Kickstarter project failing to gain enough support back in March.

So will the Noke fare better? It’s hard to say, though the campaign still has a month to reach its goal, and so things are looking positive so far. As for how much the Noke will cost, the lock can be yours with a pledge of $59 with an estimated February 2015 shipping date. That’s $30 cheaper than their anticipated retail pricing. Honestly though, that’s a lot to spend for a lock, especially when a traditional padlock can be had for around $10 (give or take).

The Noke certainly makes using a padlock a bit easier, though it is probably debatable whether the Bluetooth padlock is worth such a premium price tag. The Noke also has a combination clicking system for those moments when you need to open it but your phone is off or the lock’s battery is dead. What do you think, like the idea of the Noke? How much would you be willing to pay for such a device?
