AT&T roaming deal gives customers access to 16,000 UK WiFi hotspots
Any AT&T customers planning on taking a trip across the Atlantic may be interested to note that their carrier has signed a deal which will give them access to BSkyB’s 16,000 UK WiFi hotspots, which are provided by The Cloud.
But there are a few limitations to the deal. Firstly you’ll have to be signed up to one of AT&T’s Data Global Add-ons worth $60 or more, so it’s not really a “free” WiFi service. The steep price means that this service is unlikely to be used by many people taking a short break; instead it’s probably intended for business users or very frequent travelers.
Secondly there’s a pretty measly 1Gb international data allowance applied to the WiFi networks you connect to. So don’t plan on steaming too many movies whilst you’re away.
If you’re signed up to an international data plan and want to make use of your network allowance you’ll need to grab AT&T’s WiFi International app from the Google Play Store. The app is required if you want to log into any of The Cloud’s hotspots. It will also let you view a map or list containing the locations of nearby available WiFi connections. You’ll need Android 2.2 or higher to run the smartphone app, and 3.2 or higher if you’re planning on using your tablet abroad.
Sadly this deal probably isn’t applicable to most AT&T customers, but hopefully it’s a sign of things to come. Maybe sometime in the future international data access will be more affordable for us all.
