Asus reportedly gearing up for U.S. smartphone market entry in 2014

We’ve seen plenty of really good stuff from Taiwan-based Asus in the past few months — not to mention the brand-spanking new Nexus 7 tablet — so there’s a lot of interest in what kind of moves the company is planning to do next. So what exactly is in the cards for them? If a recent report on All Things D is to be believed, the next big step for Asus is a bold entry into the competitive smartphone market in the U.S.

According to Asus Chairman Jonney Shih in an interview with All Things D, the company is already “hard at work” and would really like to make an entry into the U.S. smartphone market to take on the likes of not only Apple and Samsung but also fellow Asian outfits like Huawei and ZTE. However, Shih admits that they are not ready yet, and that doing it next year would be “more reasonable.”

In order to make the most out of its planned entry into the U.S. smartphone market, Asus is said to have already strengthened its ties with carriers and retailers. This is something that apparently needs to be done in the U.S. to avoid the fate of other companies who have tried and failed to become market leaders in the past.

As for what products Asus has planned for the Americans, the company’s chairman has promised “something even more revolutionary.” It would no doubt be a more refined version of its current handset offerings, made with the same level of craftsmanship as perhaps the Nexus 7 (2013). If that’s the case, then those who are already in the U.S. smartphone market need to watch out.
