Mysterious Samsung 5G 'Bolt' phone referenced in Note 9 firmware

The firmware refers to a smartphone with the codename “bolt5gvzw.” The “5G” aspect of the codename is relatively easy to figure out, as is the final three letters, “VZW,” which reference Verizon Wireless. The “Bolt,” however, is unknown at this point, but is very likely the name of a smartphone. If so, the codename suggests there is a Samsung 5G smartphone on the way to Verizon which will either be codenamed Bolt or be called the Samsung Bolt.

Samsung embraces camera cutout lighting, brings feature to Good Lock

After the Samsung Galaxy S10 family hit store shelves, a few apps popped up that allowed users to emulate a notification light by adding lighting effects around the camera cutout on the front of the devices. Holey Light is one such example, which we wrote about here. As with Holey Light, users can customize a light ring around the selfie cam which appears when notifications arrive on the Galaxy S10. You can choose a different color for each type of notification (including a multi-color option) and can also customize the duration of the light’s blinking.

Samsung now selling refurbished devices in the US

Late last month, we caught word that Samsung may start selling refurbished high end devices in the US. Sources close to Samsung reported to Reuters that this may come about as early as 2017. However, it looks like Samsung had these plans well in the works by the time news leaked, because the Korean tech titan just launched their Certified Pre-Owned device store. Although some users may grouse at the idea of using a refurbished smartphone, it’s an excellent option for people who want to experience flagship tier technology but who previously haven’t had to the cash to shell out for them upon release.

You won't be able to log into your Google account on your old device soon

TL;DR You won’t be able to log in to your Google account on your old device from September 27. This affects all devices running Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread and lower. There are loads of Android devices out there running outdated versions of the platform, be it due to manufacturers no longer issuing updates or because these devices are simply very old. You can still do the basics here, but it looks like Google is introducing a major restriction soon.

4G costs carriers less to deliver than 3G, so why does it cost more?

Did you know that when you upgrade your phone to your wireless providers’ 4G network, you are actually helping your wireless provider financially? Wireless providers’ 4G networks are cheaper to deliver for cellular carriers. So, why do you end up paying more for using the 4G network than on the slower 3G service? Although the story goes into great detail about the difference between 4G and 3G networks, the bottom line is that carriers are delivering significantly more speeds at half the cost/effort.

Chrome for Android no longer merging apps and tabs by default

Quick show of hands, how many of you actually liked when Chrome began populating the recent apps menu with every single one of your open tabs, starting with Lollipop? I suspect that not many of you put your hands up, probably because you didn’t like the feature at all, or you realize I can’t actually see you put your hand up anyhow. Personally, this was one of the first things I shut off in the Chrome settings and was totally thankful that Google was merciful enough to give us the option of disabling this ‘feature’.
