AT&T plans to launch its first 5G video network trials in 2017

AT&T is offering more information on its plans to trial its 5G network service in 2017. The wireless carrier has already launched business customer trials for 5G speeds in Austin, Texas, and plans to expand its efforts in the next year. Google just found out, the hard way, how difficult it can be to coordinate a major smartphone launch. Details about its first self-branded smartphones, the Pixel and Pixel XL, have been published by several retailers ahead of their official unveiling tomorrow. The most revealing leak comes from Carphone Warehouse. The British retailer put up, and quickly removed, product listings for the Pixel and Pixel XL. The listings confirm much of what we were anticipating thanks to older leaks, and add a handful of new details.

Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Gear pre-orders start on September 6 from Verizon

Both the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear will be available for pre-order starting with September 6 at 9AM EST. However, Verizon has not mentioned actual prices for the two gadgets, nor did it say when they will be launched. Samsung confirmed on stage during its Unpacked 2 event yesterday that all its new devices – including the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Gear and Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) – will be launched on September 25 in certain markets, with 149 countries to get it in October.

Gboard now uses AI to suggest GIFs, stickers, and emoji

TL;DR Google has announced an automatic search feature for Gboard. The feature uses on-device AI to make GIF, sticker, and emoji suggestions based on what you type. The feature is rolling out on Android. Gboard is already very familiar with GIFs, stickers, and emoji, since you can search for them from within the keyboard. However, today’s update automatically surfaces relevant GIFs, stickers, and emoji without the need to search for them.

Google Duplex is still creepy, but it's ready for the real world

TL;DR Google confirmed that it will begin testing Google Duplex in the coming weeks. Duplex now introduces itself and asks businesses if it is okay to record the call. Businesses can opt out during the conversation and humans can take over the call if Duplex makes mistakes. When Google Duplex debuted in May, you could hear jaws drop. This was the first time anyone had heard artificial intelligence sound so human and so responsive.

HTC to reportedly create an independent VR company

Update: 01/19/2015 Following reports from Taiwan that HTC is preparing to spin off its virtual reality business into a standalone company, HTC has issued a statement dismissing the claims. The reports had suggested that HTC's Cher Wang would head up and at least part own a new company that would take over HTC's work on virtual reality, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Recent media reports in Taiwan, such as by United Evening News, stating that Cher Wang is planning to spin off HTC’s VR operations into an independent entity that will be wholly owned by Wang is incorrect.

Huawei has a clever way of making big camera modules more useful

Huawei has filed a new design patent which shows an unspecified Mate series phone with a quad rear camera setup. What’s unusual about this patent is a new touch display surrounding the four rear cameras. If you recall, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro featured a circular “halo” ring around its camera setup. The new patent (h/t LetsGoDigital) shows that Huawei will convert this ring into a display that’ll respond to touches, clicks, and sliding gestures.
