Duolingo finally adds Mandarin to its list of supported languages

Duolingo is one of the most popular language learning apps in the world, providing free access to tons of language courses with an engaging “gamified” experience. It’s already brilliant, featuring on our best language apps list, but it had until now been lacking the world’s most prevalent language: Mandarin. This was added to the Duolingo app yesterday, following the introduction of a couple of other Asian languages earlier this year (Duolingo received support for Japanese in May and Korean in September).

Google Play Music updated to reduce mobile data usage

The problem with cloud based computing is you need a good data connection to the Internet. Broadband services at home (including those lucky enough to have Google Fiber) are great and in the most part offer unlimited bandwidth. But on mobile it is different. Data plans are often capped or the carrier’s unlimited options are beyond the means of many users. To help ease the data usage problem for those streaming music over a 3G or 4G connection Google has updated its Play Music app to add new streaming quality settings.

Google's Uptime app offers unique way of watching YouTube videos with friends

Google opened the Area 120 startup combinator last year, which allows its employees to work on their own business ideas. Now, the first product developed at the incubator, called Uptime, has been officially announced. Uptime is a group video messaging app that lets you watch YouTube videos with your friends. It’s quite simple to use. First, you have to sign up with your Google account and are then presented with the option of checking out a short tutorial that explains how the app works.

The gaming market will be worth around $124 billion this year and about 35 percent of that is for mobile gaming. That makes mobile gaming the largest segment in the market, beating console gaming, which makes up around 46 percent of the market.

Huawei's Emotion UI simplifies Android for the user [interview]

We earlier wondered why Huawei’s Emotion UI ditched the app drawer in favor of a different home screen setup. Over at the IFA 2012 in Berlin, our very own Darcy LaCouvee had the opportunity to interview Huawei’s phone unit vice president Lars-Christian Weissewange, where the executive explained the concepts behind Huawei’s design decisions. Weissewange explains that the Emotion UI does away with the complexities of vanilla Android, but kept the flexibility associated with the mobile OS.

New Chromecast competitor surfaces, brings full Android apps for $49

At just $35, the Chromecast is an incredibly affordable media streaming device with support for quite a few services including Hulu, Netflix, and Pandora. It might not give you a full Android experience in the way an Android set-top box would, but it’s also considerably cheaper. The Chromecast is a real game-changer, and for rival devices to compete they’re going to need to up their game. Now it looks like video streaming startup PLAiR is attempting to do just that.
