Want Google Fiber? The Fiber team tells us how to get it!

One gigabit of download speed. It’s easy to talk about, but not easily conceived. We can read all the stats and data we like, but until it’s experienced, none of it really makes sense. So, how can we actually experience Fiber? Building a fiber optic network is a huge task, so how does Google accomplish it all? More importantly, we want to know how we can get it in our cities.

Xiaomi's New Lamps, Bulb are an Excellent Way to 'Smarten' Your Home

I’m admittedly new to the “smart home” scene. Up until now, my only smart home devices were a couple of Google Home Minis, an Echo Dot, and a Nest thermostat. Those are neat, but I didn’t really go full throttle into the big “smart home” scene until Xiaomi offered a few products to review. Now I’m a changed man. I want a smarter home. Xiaomi is obviously best known as a phone maker in select markets in Asia and Europe.

Android is still suffering from horrendous audio latency

It has been a little while since we last looked at the long running, unresolved issue of audio latency and Android. I wish I could tell you that things were all fixed up with the roll-out of Android Lollipop, but sadly there doesn’t appear to have been enough of an improvement. Results compiled by Nervous Systems using data collected by the SuperPowered measurement application, which we talked about before, show that the most popular Android handsets are still far too slow at providing a round-trip from jack/mic to speaker for real-time audio processing.

Android Wear will soon support watch to watch communication

The next big version of Android Wear looks set to bring a couple of new features that have been present on the Apple Watch, if a new report is to be believed. The first of the new features is interactive watch faces, which will bring a new single tap gesture to Android Wear.

Chip shortage forces Samsung to raise component prices

Kris Carlon / Android Authority TL;DR A report suggests Samsung is fighting the global chip shortage by raising component prices. In some cases, the increases are as much as 20%. More expensive components will mean higher-priced consumer products. We are still amid a global supply chain shortage when it comes to electronic devices. Everything from cars to laptops to smartphones are getting delayed, rolling out in fewer numbers, or missing features you would have expected.

Google Camera update hints at upcoming Pixel 4a, 24fps video recording

A recent Google Camera APK teardown done by XDA Developers hints at Google’s next mid-range device and the possible inclusion of 24fps video recording. The teardown was of the Google Camera’s latest update — version 7.3.017 — and it also includes a few minor tweaks to the app interface and functionality. Most notably, this app update contains references to Google’s upcoming Pixel 4a. The codenames sunfish, redfin, and bramble appear next to a string titled “pixel_20_mid_range.

Google’s new Chrome extension is a Bookmark Manager for the modern age

Remember Google Stars, the cloud-based bookmark manager replacement that leaked in “dogfood” form back in May? It looks like it’s finally ready for the spotlight, albeit under a different and less inspiring name – Bookmark Manager. Now available for free in the Chrome extension catalogue, Bookmark Manager replaces Chrome’s drab default bookmarks tool with a fresh card-based interface featuring bold colors and a touch of Material design. Once installed, you can click on the star icon displayed on the right side of the address bar – a.

Huawei P9 Lite hands on

Many Android OEMs bank on the name recognition of their popular, high-end smartphones by releasing different versions that share the flagship name. As manufacturers have tended to do, this is seen in the form of Plus iterations, that indicate a bigger size in general, and in some cases, more powerful specifications, and Lite versions, that take things down a notch in terms of size, specs, and most importantly price. This has become an increasingly common practice across the board, and Huawei is certainly not a stranger to it.

In-display fingerprint scanning on a budget

TL;DR Vivo announced its latest mid-range phone, the V11. The device offers an in-display fingerprint scanner and sub-flagship specs. The new phone also has a 25MP selfie camera and a variety of AI-branded features. Vivo made quite a splash when it demonstrated the X20 Plus UD and its in-display fingerprint scanner at CES 2018. Now, the company is hoping to bring some of that innovation to a lower price point with the new Vivo V11 (known as the V11 Pro in India).
