In trying to name off all the operating systems for mobile devices, it feels a bit like Christmas. It seems as though we’re naming reindeer rather than platforms. As we consider each of them, and then the mobile OS landscape in its entirety, we’re left to wonder if we need all this? More importantly, does this damage or threaten Android in any way? Some old OSs are dying out, and some new ones are scrambling to fill their place.

Galaxy Note 3 battery tests show its strengths and weaknesses

Great battery life is one of the leading selling points of the Galaxy Note series. The Galaxy Note 2 is among the few devices you don’t have to charge every night (power users need not apply) — will the Galaxy Note 3, with its slightly larger 3200 mAh battery, outdo its predecessor? Korean website Playwares did some interesting tests, revealing that, when it comes to battery life, the Note 3 (SM-900, Exynos 5420) is a bit inconsistent, depending on how you utilize it.

MariSilicon X is Oppo's first custom imaging processor for smartphones

It’s peak chip announcement season, it seems, and Oppo has just unveiled its first piece of custom silicon at its Inno Day 2021 — named MariSilicon X. This is not a fully-fledged SoC like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Google Tensor, but rather a custom image signal processor, or imaging NPU, imbued with Oppo’s machine learning smarts. According to Oppo, algorithms are leading the way for mobile photography innovations yet SoC machine learning number-crunching capabilities are currently the bottleneck to better images.

Riot confirms a Valorant mobile game is in the works

Riot Games TL;DR Riot Games has confirmed that a Valorant mobile game is in the works. The developer notes that Valorant Mobile will cater specifically to the needs of mobile players. There’s no confirmed launch date at present. Riot Games’ tactical team shooter Valorant made its debut on PC a little over a year ago, attracting players from FPS and team-based games. Now, the developer has announced plans to bring the title to mobile.
