It’s a year since the arrival of the Huawei P30 Pro, a phone we praised for offering a superior camera setup and long battery life than its competitors. The handset was a pioneer of low light photography and rich with flagship defining features, making it one of the best buys of 2019. Providing it was available in your country that is (sorry, US folks). But do those design wins still hold up 12 months later?

TL;DR An official Google job listing strongly hints at a big push for tablets running Android. The listing clearly refers to tablets as the “future of computing.” This would be the company’s third attempt to succeed in the tablet market. Apple launched the original iPad in 2010. Apple laughed all the way to the bank, though, as the iPad is now the world’s most popular tablet computer — and only growing.

LG Display TL;DR LG is using CES to show how its transparent OLEDs could be used in the real world. It envisions a “Smart Bed” where a transparent TV could sit at your feet. It’s still not clear when you might see this in mobile devices. LG Display is still eager to make transparent OLED displays a practical reality, and it’s using CES 2021 to show just what might be possible.

Back in November, we heard a rumor that Google could launch its own branded checking accounts in 2020. Well, here we are in 2020 (what a ride it’s been so far!), and we have our first look at what this account might come with: a Google Pay card that will act as a debit card for your checking account. The image of the card was obtained by TechCrunch, which got the picture from an anonymous source who was able to prove that it came directly from Google.

TL;DR A new subscription-based app called Beeper promises to unify 15 messaging apps. The app also touts iMessage support. The iMessage functionality requires a Mac, or Beeper will send an old iPhone to you. There are loads of cross-platform chat apps out there, with the likes of WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal all available on both Android and iOS. Unfortunately, Apple’s iMessages app is still an Apple-exclusive service. But a new app promises to unify a variety of popular chat apps, including Apple’s chat platform.
