Xiaomi accidentally uses Apple ads to promote product

As first spotted by a pair of sites (CX Live and Daring Fireball, via MacRumors), Xiaomi uploaded an Apple ad to its own website — as well as several others — to promote its new Mimoji, which are eerily similar to Apple’s similarly-named Memoji. Xiaomi claims that the uploading of a competitor’s ad to promote its own product was an accident. The ads have since been removed and Xiaomi’s public relations general manager, Xu Jieyun, explained that Xiaomi staff had “uploaded the wrong content” to the sites.

4G LTE network now covers 61% of the Canadian population

Telus has some good news to share for folks who need a blazing fast mobile Internet connection in their lives, the kind that only LTE can provide. Although it wasn’t the first to offer 4G LTE wireless service, the carrier has been aggressively expanding its LTE network coverage in the country. The latest expansions see Telus’ 4G LTE network covering 61% of the Canadian population. That’s roughly 20 million happy Canadians.

A weird Pixel Launcher bug making app icons invisible

A weird bug has befallen Pixel smartphones, making app icons disappear from the phones. Pixel devices on Android 10 with the December 2019 security patch seem to be affected. 9to5Google reports that the the bug makes app icons invisible on the Pixel Launcher. Instead of the icon, a blank space appears with the name of the app and the background wallpaper on the phone takes over the empty space. However, users are still able to open the app by tapping its name.

Not only does the update include visual updates, such as pumpkins for heads on several zombies, but it comes with other additions too. For example, players can now wield a crossbow for 99 in-game “gold” – you have to complete offers to obtain the virtual currency. Moreover, the update includes a new arena, Haunted Graveyard, “the scariest place in the City,” a spooky addition to Madfinger’s take on the festive season. Other changes include the mini gun, which also comes at a reduced price, while the AlienGun effect has been improved for lower-end devices, meaning higher frames-per-second.

Google & Apple working to bring racial diversity to emoji characters

The Unicode Consortium (the organization that coordinates development of the Unicode standard) recently introduced a proposal that would entail adding more racial diversity to the emoji characters (i.e the little yellow smiley faces you insert into text messages) used for mobile devices. Google and Apple have already both viewed and edited the proposal, which looks to bring skin tones and racial variety to emoji faces. HTC One A9 heading to the US in October

HTC is planning to release a new smartphone on October 20th and a model has just been spotted passing through the FCC and GFC, all but confirming that the HTC One A9 is heading to the US. According to the listings, there appear to be three HTC One A9 models on the way. There’s what looks to be an international version sporting various network bands and the 2PQ9100 model number, which might be called the A9u.
