5 major features we first spotted on Android

Apple held its World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote yesterday, giving people a taste of updates to come on Apple devices. As is now tradition, the company showed off the latest version of iOS at the event (iOS 12), delivering plenty of new features to the platform. Upon closer look, however, you’ll find that some of these new features have previously been announced by Google or are in Android already. Let’s take a look at a few of these features…

5 MediaTek technologies you may have missed

MediaTek may be most well-known for multi-core mobile system-on-a-chips and its notable share in the mid-range smartphone market. But much like its rival Qualcomm, MediaTek has been building up a selection of extra features and technologies that complement its growing mobile SoC portfolio. Here is a collection of the most important ones that you may have missed. 1 – CorePilot 3.0 Before we delve into the non-CPU related goodies, one of MediaTek’s big announcements this year was its deca-core Helio X20 mobile SoC.

Android 10 on Android TV launched, new developer-only streamer, too

As we expected, Google just launched Android 10 on Android TV. It was inevitable that the platform would get the upgrade at some point, so no surprises there. However, Google did surprise us a bit by revealing an upcoming media streaming dongle designed specifically for developers. We’ll get to the dongle in a minute, but first, let’s discuss Android 10 on Android TV. Additionally, Android 10 on Android TV features a few upgrades related to network connections, which will hopefully make your media streaming smoother and more reliable.

Google's Play family of apps will soon get a unified icon design

A handful of Google’s applications reside under the “Play” moniker. Play Store, Play Movies & TV, Play Music, Play Games, Play Books and Play Newsstand are all apps we’ve come to know and love over the years, but their app icons have never really been all that consistent with one another. Thankfully that’s about to change. Google has just announced that it will soon be rolling out an update that will bring a more consistent look across the entire family of Play apps.

Huawei P30 model to arrive with periscope camera, should be a zoom champ

Huawei has developed a periscope camera set to arrive on one of its Huawei P30 handsets when they’re revealed later this month. The company discussed the camera technology at a meeting during MWC 2019, letting us in on what’s in store for at least one of its phones’ rumored multi-rear camera setups. Periscope lenses can offer mobile devices superior zoom capabilities compared to other, more traditional camera setups. Huawei suggested this periscope lens was its own, not one touted by Chinese competitor Oppo.

Mad Catz M.O.J.O micro-console includes Tegra 4 CPU and Google Play

The long-term appeal of Android micro-consolesmight still be in question, but for now, there’s clearly a market for Android game systems. While devices like the Ouya and Gamestick go after the low-end market, Nvidia currently targets the mobile gamer with the high-end Shield. Is there room for more Android-powered game consoles? Mad Catz seems to think so. Back in June, the accessory maker announced that its so-called Project M.O.J.O. would not only be powered by Android but would even offer Google Play right out of the box.

Most of you don't use dual apps, but it has some fans

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority Dual apps functionality has been around on smartphones for several years now, allowing users to create another instance of an installed app. It also has a variety of names depending on the manufacturer, such as parallel apps, dual messenger, and app twin. The feature is available on many phones, but is it something you actually use? We posed this question last week and here’s how you answered it.

Moto X Pure Edition might now be receiving Android 7.0 Nougat update

Update, November 30: It was two months ago when it once more looked like Motorola was rolling out the Android Nougat update for the Moto X Pure Edition; its owners had already encountered one false start, so we were cautious when the update made some scattered appearances in September. Though it transpired that those updates were limited to only a handful of users, we're now fairly certain that it's rolling out proper. Recent comments on Reddit, the XDA forums, and the Lenovo forums (via Android Police) would suggest so, meaning the handset is now receiving what will undoubtedly be its last major update.

New Chrome experiment 'Cube Slam' is a blast from the past

Chrome experiments are just a load of fun, aren’t they? Whether you’re racing a car, playing skeeball, or navigating a maze, the Chrome team gives us tons of fun stuff to do. This time, they went about as old school as you can get. Call it what you like, but Cube Slam is Pong. It is, of course, multiplayer if you like, but can also be played against a bear named Bob.

Nexus 5 update causing major volume bugs, get the fix here

When the July 2016 security update rolled out toNexus 5 devices, users began experiencing an array of volume related bugs. For some, in-call volume adjustment went kaput, others experienced an inability to mute apps, and a few even had all of their phone’s volume sliders drop just to the point of barely being audible. Owners of the device took to reddit and other online forums and made Android devs aware of the issue.
