Shatter-proof Droid Turbo 2 dropped from 900 feet

Motorola initially announced its shatter-proof display Droid Turbo 2 (also known as the Moto X Force) with a drop test and it was only a matter of time before other people starting putting the smartphone through some tougher tests. Youtube channel UnlockRiver has taken the challenge quite a bit further, with a 900 foot drop test. Motorola’s display gets its shatter-proof properties from five individual flexible plastic layers that are stacked on top of the OLED panel, rather than using glass to protect the underlying circuit.

Turing's 'Dark Wyvern' up for preoder, comes with Armor case enabling 60GHz data transfers

Those who purchase the $999 Dark Wyvern will also receive the Turing Armor protective case. This may sound trivial, but wait until you hear the details around this case – it’s not your usual one. The company is highlighting the super fast data transfer technology, called Wind Tunnel, that comes integrated in this phone cover. The gadget is WiGig-enabled, which means it supports data transfers of about 3.2 GB in under 25 seconds. It can also back up  64 GB of data in less than 8 minutes.

What you need to know

Mobile chip developers have been lining up their next generation hardware for a few months now and Huawei’s HiSilicon has just announced its new high-end Kirin 950, and it’s a beast. We’ll start with the main processing components, the CPU and GPU. The Kirin 950 is the first SoC based on ARM’s big.LITTLE technology to make use of four Cortex-A72 and four Cortex A53 CPU cores, combined with a Mali-T880 GPU for some serious all-around performance.

ZTE's under-display selfie smartphone is here. Here's how it works.

Almost exactly a year ago, we attended Oppo Innovation Day 2019 in Shenzhen. At the event, Oppo showed off the first under-display smartphone camera concept. While there were multiple other technologies highlighted at the event, the hidden selfie camera was clearly the star of the show, as it begins the final chapter of creating a truly bezel-less smartphone. Well, Oppo still hasn’t released a smartphone with the technology. But as goes the course of capitalism, if you don’t make something, someone else will.

A sequel to one of 2019's most popular phones is coming

It looks like Samsung is preparing a sequel, as frequent leaker Evan Blass has posted an apparent 360 degree Galaxy A21 render on his Patreon account. The render shows a phone with a punch-hole display rather than a waterdrop notch as seen on the Galaxy A20. We also get a look at the back of the phone, revealing a quad rear camera instead of the old phone’s dual camera setup.

Arm Cortex-A78C targets laptops and hand-held console performance

A few days ago, Arm quietly launched its Cortex-A78C CPU core in a blog post. The processor builds on the previously announced Cortex-A78, but with a higher performance target than smartphones. The Cortex-A78C is designed primarily for always-connected laptops and other high-performance, battery-powered products. With Arm-powered Macs right around the corner, the Cortex-A78C could end up as the rival CPU in the Windows on Arm ecosystem for 2021 laptops.

Fact checking Huawei's claims of superiority

Richard Yu’s keynote announcement of Huawei’s new Kirin 980 smartphone SoC was an unusually aggressive affair. The company has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 firmly in its sights, with comparisons and benchmarks abound that showcase the Kirin 980 coming out on top. Of course, without a smartphone in our own hands, we shouldn’t be too trusting of Huawei’s own internal testing. However, we can definitely take a look at some of the company’s claims and see which make sense given the bountiful details that we already have on the latest Arm CPU and GPU parts that the 980 is using.

Fast chip, fast screen, fast charging

Supplied by Poco TL;DR Poco has launched the Poco X3 GT in several markets. The phone is essentially a rebranded Chinese Redmi Note 10 Pro. Expect to pay a starting price of $299. Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 10 Pro globally earlier this year, but the Chinese version is actually a totally different device. Now, the Chinese variant has arrived in wider markets, albeit with a name change.

Google Nexus 7 release date and pricing

The Google Nexus 7 Android tablet is finally official, as Google has just announced it at this year’s Google I/O developer conference, just as we expected. The device is indeed made by Asus, and while it’s not necessarily an iPad rival, it will certainly be a fierce competitor for the Amazon Kindle Fire. The tablet features a 7-inch touchscreen IPS display with 1280 x 800 HD display and scratch-resistant Corning glass, a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, GeForce 12-core GPU, 1GB of RAM, 8/16GB of memory, 1.
