Google is reportedly planning to move production of its Pixel smartphones from China to Vietnam, amid a backdrop of increased labor costs and the U.S. trade war with China.
According to the Nikkei Asian Review, citing two sources familiar with the plans, Google has started work on converting an old Nokia factory in Vietnam to produce Pixel phones. More specifically, it’s believed that the Mountain View company plans to shift production of some Pixel 3a phones to Vietnam before the end of 2019.
Music is an audio medium first, but a newly launched software experiment from Google now allows people to “see” how music is made. It’s called Inside Music, and it’s design to peel away the main layers of sound that are created when an artist makes a new song.

MediaTek has announced the Helio P70 chipset. The new chip is mostly identical to the Helio P60, save for higher clock speeds. The company also confirmed that it’s launching a more powerful chip before the end of the year. MediaTek’s Helio P60 might be the surprise chipset of 2018, bringing a capable octa-core CPU arrangement and AI silicon to mid-range smartphones. Now, the Taiwanese firm has followed up with the Helio P70.

China just approved a new LG OLED plant in Guangzhou. The approval came only two weeks after a reported LG/Apple partnership hit the news. The new LG OLED plant will primarily focus on televisions, but it’s likely it will create smartphone panels as well. LG announced today in a press release that the Chinese government just approved LG to build an OLED production facility in Guangzhou. A mock-up of the plant is pictured above.

Two new Samsung foldable phones are roaming the market today. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 refines its predecessor’s strengths and brings even more features to the party. The Galaxy Z Flip 3, meanwhile, condenses the flip-foldable formula into a more accessible package. Both phones are pretty appealing on paper, but if you had to purchase one, which would you choose?
Which new Samsung foldable would you get?
Update, September 12: Samsung issued a statement to Android Central regarding the deactivation report. From the website:
“The firm’s official line is that this isn’t happening. We’ve reached out to Samsung and been told that this is not something the company has stated, and that all official guidance will be published on its website.”
The wording of the response, which is rather unclear, leaves some room for interpretation. Samsung denied that it stated it would deactivate devices, which is true, but doesn’t technically contradict the Redditor’s report.
The smartphone industry has come along way in the last few years, and during that time mobile device form factors have evolved quite a bit. While Blackberry still continues to cling on to the physical keyboard approach, finding an Android device with a physical QWERTY keyboard is becoming harder and harder to do.
As touchscreens improve, there just isn’t as much need for physical keys as there used to be. But what if you enjoy that tactile feedback provided from pushing against an actual button?
It seems Vivante may have just beaten Samsung to the punch in terms of releasing a mobile GPU that has support for the latest GPU specifications like OpenGL ES 3.0 and OpenCL 1.1. Vivante’s GPUs are usually found in SoC platforms from companies we don’t hear much about, like Freescale and Marvell (which powers the latest Vizio Co-Star Google TV).
As a promoter and contributor in the Khronos OpenGL ES Working Group, Freescale worked closely with Vivante and committee members to define the next generation graphics API, which is expected to offer highly advanced graphics innovations to current and upcoming mobile and consumer devices.
