Google TV officially shutting down, Android TV to reign the living room

Early adopters of Google’s living room initiative may now be in possession of obsolete hardware. Google is officially focusing its living room team on the newer Android TV, putting a freeze on further Google TV development themselves, and pulling the developer tools that other developers have relied upon to build their apps. This news comes quietly out of a Google+ post from the Google TV and Android TV teams on the Google TV Developers Google+ page.

Hands-on with the Alcatel U5, A3, and A5 LED

We are here at MWC 2017, and Alcatel just unveiled their latest smartphone offerings. Unlike previous years, where the company had a star in the “premium mid-range” Idol series, this time around, Alcatel is focusing on bolstering their low-end and mid-range, and most importantly, ultra affordable, smartphone portfolio. We go hands on and give you a quick look at the Alcatel U5, A3, and A5 LED! Alcatel U5Starting with the Alcatel U5, the device features decidedly low-end specifications, including a 5-inch display with a 480 x 854, a quad-core MediaTek MT6737M processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of on-board storage, microSD card support, and a 2,050 mAh battery.

Help keep your devices charged with the LithiumCard Wallet Battery Pack for only $20

Sometimes it can be difficult to find a power outlet when you’re out and about. So what do you do when your smartphone or tablet is running out of juice? We’d recommend using an external battery pack, those convenient little batteries you can store in your purse or backpack to help keep your devices fully charged. Some battery packs are bulky, though, and we understand not everyone carries around a backpack at all times.

Here's how many cases you have for your phone

Jimmy Westenberg / Android Authority A case is arguably the most important accessory you can buy for your phone, especially if you’ve spent a pretty penny on the device. These cases are generally meant to protect your phone, but they also come in all shapes and sizes. So with that in mind, we wondered whether Android Authority readers just stuck with one case for their device or if they had more.

Meet Motorola Skip, the Moto X NFC-based unlock accessory

The Moto X has one more trick up its sleeve, a NFC-based unlocked accessory that can be worn by the user in order to unlock the handset with a single tap – meet the Motorola Skip. The accessory has been quietly listed on Motorola’s website, where it can be ordered from for $19.99. The device appears as a “limited time offer for MotoMaker for Moto X, a $19.99 value,” but we don’t have any idea what this means.

Motorola RAZR Ice Cream Sandwich coming to Canada in ‘early September,’ Jelly Bean who?

Jelly Bean is still just a fantasy for most devices out there, especially the ones that could run Android 4.1 but are yet to receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. Such is the case with Canadian Motorola RAZR users that are still waiting to officially taste ICS on their handsets. However, there’s good news for them as Mobile Syrup is reporting that Motorola Canada mentioned on its Facebook Page an “early September” rollout of the RAZR ICS update:

Verizon Moto X to get MotoMaker later, bloatware present from launch

The Moto X will launch with various U.S. carriers starting with late August, although not all Moto X offers from mobile operators will be similar at launch. However, that MotoMaker customization feature will come to other mobile operators later, with Verizon already having confirmed via Twitter that it will offer the feature to its subscribers later this year: Considering that the handset will launch in late August / early September in the USA, that means that AT&T will have a very short exclusive Moto X offer.

Xperia Z2 survives six weeks under water, 10 meters deep

One of the features that has helped set Sony apart from the rest of the pack is that its devices often come with water and dust resistant technology, although handsets like the Galaxy S5 have now followed suit with this trend. Officially, Sony rates its Xperia Z2 as being IP58 complaint, meaning it can handle fresh water up to 1.5m for up to 30 minutes. Unofficially though? It seems the handset can last much longer than we’d think.

ADzero bamboo phone inching closer to release, will pack quad-core CPU

We’ve seen a lot of unusual concepts and prototypes over the years, but nothing looked as crazy as the ADzero smartphone shown off back in February. Crazy original we mean, because there was nothing to put us off at an organic, ultra-light and super-elegant phone made entirely out of bamboo. Still, we couldn’t help but feel that this might have been a bit ahead of times, so we weren’t exactly shocked when time passed by and we heard nothing about any project developments.
