UK retailer Dixons Carphone has struck a deal with Sprint to expand into the USA and will open and manage 20 Sprint-branded stores as part of a pilot programme that could see up to 500 US stores opened. If the pilot is successful, Dixons Carphone will invest up to $32m (£20m) for a 50% stake in the joint venture during the second stage of the programme. The deal is the first major expansion programme since Dixons and Carphone Warehouse merged to form Europe’s largest retailer in Dixons Carphone last year.

Unlimited mobile data plans are becoming quite the precious commodity these days. While T-Mobile and Sprint still have unlimited offerings, both AT&T and Verizon have chosen to remove such options. Developer Scott Cawthon has just released Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 to the Google Play Store, following the recent release of the PC version. Earlier this year, among the plethora of pre-release Galaxy S3-related rumors we’ve seen was one that mentioned the next Samsung smartphone will come pre loaded with the company’s own cloud solution. Dubbed S Cloud, the Samsung cloud was seen as a direct response to Apple’s iCloud that became available to iOS, OS X and Windows users once iOS 5 was released back in October 2011. Samsung never unveiled the S Cloud in May, or later, and we had to put a pin in the rumor.

TL;DR Google has announced Project Mainline, allowing core Android components to be updated via Google Play. Core Android components previously had to be updated via a full OTA update from a manufacturer. Google says another benefit is that major security fixes can be deployed via this method. One of the biggest complaints about Android over the years has been the lack of system updates compared to Apple devices. Google has since delivered the Project Treble initiative to speed things up, but it’s also got another initiative up its sleeve in Project Mainline.
