Essential discusses its next phone, Andy Rubin, Oreo, and portrait mode in Reddit AMA

Essential’s Andy Rubin was revealed to be taking a break from Essential yesterday in the wake of a report regarding an “inappropriate relationship” he was alleged to have had while at Google. Though there must be a lot going on at the company currently, Essential continued with its bi-weekly Reddit “Ask Me Anything” threads yesterday where the team weighed in on a variety of topics. Firstly, they did touch on Rubin’s absence, simply stating that it was “business as usual” at Essential.

Google reportedly extends its work from home policy through to July 2021

TL;DR Google employees will continue to work from home until at least July 2021. The decision will affect approximately 200,000 individuals. The move comes as the coronavirus pandemic intensifies in the US. Update: July 27, 2020 at 12:48 PM ET: Google confirmed its new work-from-home policy in an email to Android Authority. Sundar Pichai sent an email to employees this morning, which said: To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021 for roles that don’t need to be in the office.

Google reportedly thinking about selling its Zagat restaurant review guide

Since 2011, Zagat has been under Google ownership in an effort to push the search giant’s local search efforts. Fast forward six years, and it looks like Google might be ready to offload the restaurant review guide onto someone else’s shoulders. According to Reuters, Google informally met with several companies regarding a possible Zagat sale. Even though we do not know how much Google wants to sell the restaurant guide for, and that there is no guarantee that Zagat will even be offloaded, any sale will presumably include Zagat’s brand name and website.

Project Fi meets Android One, starting with the Moto X4

Google Project Fi review - can Google make it as a carrier? Features There are two Google initiatives that in my humble opinion are brilliant but highly underappreciated and underutilized: Android One and Project Fi. Android One, if you didn’t know, launched back in 2014 as an attempt to bring secure and (relatively) pure Android software experience to lower-range devices in emerging markets. Project Fi, on the other hand, is the search giant’s US-based mobile network, which promises to connect you to the best LTE networks not just in the US but also when roaming in 135 other countries.

Telephoto cameras trump ultra-wide shooters on phones

Modern smartphone camera systems often include more than just a solitary primary snapper. It’s likely you’ll see phones across the pricing range with ultra-wide angle and telephoto snappers. But if you had to choose just one, which would it be? We posed this question to our readers in this poll. Here’s what they told us. Periscope/telephoto camera or ultra-wide? Results We saw over 2,400 votes on this poll, and the results are pretty close.

HTC One A9 heading to the US in October

HTC is planning to release a new smartphone on October 20th and a model has just been spotted passing through the FCC and GFC, all but confirming that the HTC One A9 is heading to the US. According to the listings, there appear to be three HTC One A9 models on the way. There’s what looks to be an international version sporting various network bands and the 2PQ9100 model number, which might be called the A9u.

Where are the Quad Core QWERTY Superphones?

Thin this, ultra svelte that. So what? Sure, we all love thin – but if it sacrifices overall functionality – or even more importantly – battery life, then consumers get downright angry. A recent JD Power survey revealed that people’s chief concern is with battery life or lack thereof. The race towards thinness is simply not in line with what consumers want. While it serves as a great marketing message, much like “quad core” does, it actually ends up hurting consumers by forcing them to remain near the ‘ol outlet.

AT&T employee accessed customer information without authorization

AT&T has written a letter to customers and the Vermont attorney general detailing a data breach from within their own company. In August, an AT&T employee obtained customer account information including social security and driver license numbers. It is not known how many customers were affected although some are guessing that it could be as much as 1,600 customers (per Re/code). The employee has since been fired and criminal charges are expected in the near future.

Pricing leaks for Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series

TL;DR We have some leaked pricing information for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series. The pricing is kind of vague but lines up with what we would expect the watches to cost. We still don’t have a solid release date, though. Just a few days ago, we received word that Samsung is probably going to revive the “Classic” moniker for its line of Galaxy smartwatches. With that info, we now know pretty much all there is to know about the watch series.
