Huawei announces 5G version of the Mate 20 X

Update, July 12, 2019 (01:10 PM ET): After delaying the release of the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G due to the U.S. ban on Huawei, the company has finally revealed pricing and a release date for a few areas of the world (via GSM Arena). The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is available now in the United Arab Emirates through Etisalat for the price of 3,523 UAE dirham (~$959). However, the site lists the device as being currently sold out.

Speaking to Google Home will now be more natural with Continued Conversation

TL;DR Google is rolling out the previously announced Continued Conversation feature for Google Home speakers. Google Home owners will be able to chat with Google Assistant without having to use the “Hey Google” command for follow-up requests. This should allow for a more natural conversation with Google Home devices. This new feature will let users ask Google Home to perform follow-up tasks to an initial request without having to use the “Hey Google” or “OK Google” command first.

Honor to launch mystery phone with display hole camera on January 22

TL;DR Honor has sent out invites to a new smartphone launch on January 22, 2019 in Paris. Honor says the phone is coming with a Kirin 980 chip and “in-screen camera display.” The smartphone’s name wasn’t announced. Honor will launch its first smartphone with a display hole camera in Paris on Jan. 22, 2019. The manufacturer sent out invites to the event earlier today, though it stopped short of naming the handset.

Google Babel shows up in Gmail message and Google Groups

It’s now widely accepted that Google’s new unified chat service is named ‘Babel’.  The role that Babel will play between Google’s various chat services, unifying them, is a hat tip in itself to the Tower of Babel, pictured above. Babel is said to allow users to access the same conversation list from anywhere, offer fly-in conversations, advanced group conversations, improve notifications across devices, and of course allow sending pictures. This morning Patric Dhawaan noticed while cleaning out his Inbox on Gmail a peculiar warning message.

The Huawei Enjoy 7S will go by the name Huawei PSmart outside of China

Update (12/28) 17:43: A previous version of this article inaccurately stated that the Huawei Enjoy 7S was only a rumor, though the device actually launched in China on December 20. We have updated this article with the correct information and apologize for the error. Last week, Huawei launched the Enjoy 7S in China, and today we’re getting new details as to what that phone will be called when it makes its way to other markets.

Redmi shows off LCD phone with in-display fingerprint

In-display fingerprint sensors are commonplace on flagship phones and some mid-range devices, but they require an OLED screen. Thankfully, biometric authentication companies like Goodix have previously confirmed plans to bring the technology to LCD screens in 2020. Now, Redmi general manager Lu Weibing has demonstrated an LCD smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. The executive posted a video to Weibo, while also explaining how the tech works. (Update: Samsung threatens countersuit) Huawei sues Samsung for patent infringement

Update, May 25: Speaking to Korean media, Samsung’s chief of intellectual property Ahn Seong-ho said the company is considering “countermeasures” to Huawei’s charge, including a lawsuit of its own. That’s standard procedure when big companies with rich patent portfolio engage in disputes, and Samsung is quite versed in the art of patent war. The Korean giant is still engaged in a years-long patent war with Apple, even if the two sides agreed to drop all disputes, except for those filed in the US.
