Andy Rubin's Essential in hot water over allegedly stealing connector technology

Android co-founder Andy Rubin probably didn’t imagine this being how Essential‘s first year of existence would play out. The Essential Phone turned out to not be the juggernaut we wanted it to be, shipping delays pushed the phone’s actual debut well into August instead of the original June timeframe, and customers’ personal information accidentally being shared. Alas, things don’t get better for Rubin in 2017 as Essential was sued by Keyssa, a company backed by Tony Fadell, co-founder of Nest and the brainchild behind the iPod’s concept and initial design.

Google’s Remote Desktop app gains immersive mode

Remote desktop connection on a Nexus 5 The update changes version number to 36.0.1985.39 and, immersive mode aside, doesn’t seem to change the app’s functionality. In the previous version, the persistent toolbar at the top of the UI was taking up precious real estate, especially on smartphones. Now the remote desktop can be viewed and used in full screen mode, with an unobtrusive button at the top allowing you to bring back the toolbar.

Oklahoma private university makes Fitbits mandatory

A Christian university in Tulsa, Oklahoma has made wearing Fitbits required of all students at all hours. They’re calling this part of their “whole person education” approach, and students’ fitness statistics will even be collected across holidays like spring break. Oral Roberts University has been pushing better fitness for its students for a long time. Previously, students had to manually log workout routines as a part of a mandatory health regimen.

Android is already integrated in a wide range of devices besides the “conventional” smartphones and tablets that we know and love. The list of examples is long and includes home automation systems, various gadgets, appliances, and even vehicles.
