Asus Transformer Pad TF300T getting minor OTA software update

Unlike most major Android manufacturers, which are struggling with getting out Jelly Bean updates even for the newest and coolest gadgets, Asus has already managed to officially put Android 4.1 on an aging mid-range tablet. Transformer Pad TF300T adopters have been spoiled with tasty Jelly Bean treats a few weeks ago, but that doesn’t seem to be enough for the 10-incher. A new OTA (over-the-air) software update is being rolled out to the TF300T as we speak, and, while we don’t exactly know what it could possibly upgrade at this point, we have to hand it to Asus for some very solid support work.

LibreOffice Viewer “frustratingly close” to an Android release

The community led LibreOffice software suite has been in development for quite a while since it split from the well known Linux based OpenOffice.org community. The software suite supports over 30 different languages and a good selection of operating systems, but sadly not Android. A small group of developers have been hard at work for over a year attempting to port the open source office suite over to Android, and they are on the verge of having at least part of the project ready for release.

PinOut is a fun game that puts a futuristic twist on a classic

It’s probably safe to say that everyone has played pinball at some point in their lives – whether it’s the analog version that dates all the way back to the 18th century or the digital version that came preinstalled with Windows. Well, Mediocre is putting a futuristic twist on this classic game that we all know and love, and I have to say, not only am I nostalgic, but I’m completely hooked.

Xiaomi TV Stick 4K is here with remote and Android 11

TL;DR The Xiaomi TV Stick 4K now appears on the company’s global site. With 4K support, a remote, and Android 11, its closest competitor is Google’s own Chromecast with Google TV. Xiaomi hasn’t dished pricing and availability information yet. Xiaomi may not have its smartphones in North American stores, but that doesn’t mean it has no presence here. Its media streamers — specifically the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick — have been very popular.

Gionee W909 launched with dual 720p displays and 4GB RAM

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Gionee has unveiled two new handsets this week – the Gionee W909 flip phone and a super mid-tier S8. While flip phones might not be so popular in Western countries any more, there’s still demand for these handsets in China, India, and other Asian markets. Leakers and benchmarkers have been prognosticating the W909’s specs for a while now and it turns out that there’s some pretty reasonable hardware packed into this clamshell.

Galaxy S3 dumb search ‘feature’ coming to international version via OTA update

The Apple vs Samsung legal patent war, so far won by Apple, at least according to the favorable pre-trial verdicts the company got, already has an unwanted effect on the overall Galaxy S3 user experience. Samsung is rolling out a firmware update that dumbs down the search app of the phone – instead of getting local and web results when performing a search you’ll only get web results after the update is applied.

Google starts its crackdown on Android in-app purchases in 2021

TL;DR Google will better enforce rules requiring that apps and games on the Play Store use its in-app purchase system. Android 12 will make it easier to use third-party app stores, however. This comes just as Apple and Google are taking heat for removing Fortnite over in-app rules. Google has a reputation for looser app policies than Apple, but that might change to some degree with an impending crackdown.
