The Kodak Ektra is now on sale, but what chance does it really have?

The day has arrived. Kodak, yes, Kodak now has an Android phone. The Kodak Ektra is now available for purchase in Europe for €499/£449. Now, you would be forgiven for feeling a little like Alan in Jumanji right now, what with BlackBerry, Nokia and Kodak all over the headlines. But with mainstream Android phones getting a little, dare I say, boring thanks to generally being excellent, a few whacky sideshows are always welcome.

WhatsApp getting in-app YouTube playback and voice record lock

WhatsApp my be the most popular messaging platform around but it’s by no means faultless. The Facebook team are constantly updating it with new fixes and features, the latest of which are set to be particularly handy. WhatsApp v2.17.81 for iOS is now rolling out and with it comes in-app YouTube playback and a voice record lock. In previous versions of the app, if you were sent a YouTube link, users would be directed to YouTube — via the dedicated app or a web browser — to watch the video.

Why is Apple still able to command such high prices for its iPhones?

There was once a time when an iPhone was arguably much better than your flagship Android device, largely because Android as an OS was still very new and just getting its bearings. Times have certaintly changed and now there are more than a few Android phones that are arguably better than the new iPhones. And yet, despite multiple Android devices outclassing the iPhone in a myriad of different ways (camera, battery, customization etc), the average iPhone still costs an arm and a leg more than the ‘equivalent’ Android phone.

It's been two years since the last Nokia flagship phone. What gives?

Two years is an eternity in the smartphone industry. Back in February 2019, Huawei was still offering phones with Google support and was aiming for the number one spot. Samsung hadn’t even released its first foldable yet. It also marked the last time HMD released a Nokia-branded flagship smartphone. Launched at MWC 2019, the company unveiled the Nokia 9 PureView — its last phone powered by a Snapdragon 800-series processor. That’s an incredibly long time for a smartphone brand to go without a flagship product, especially when other companies are offering high-end phones every year or even every six months.
