Huawei's Emotion UI simplifies Android for the user [interview]

We earlier wondered why Huawei’s Emotion UI ditched the app drawer in favor of a different home screen setup. Over at the IFA 2012 in Berlin, our very own Darcy LaCouvee had the opportunity to interview Huawei’s phone unit vice president Lars-Christian Weissewange, where the executive explained the concepts behind Huawei’s design decisions. Weissewange explains that the Emotion UI does away with the complexities of vanilla Android, but kept the flexibility associated with the mobile OS.

Save up to $600 on Galaxy Note 10 when you trade in these phones

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 series is scheduled for a reveal on August 7, but the company is already allowing consumers to reserve the phone. Samsung is taking reservations for the phablet via its website (h/t: Android Police), and it’s promising that users can save up to $600 by trading in their existing phones. These trade-ins are limited to Apple, Google, and Samsung phones though. So people with a phone from Huawei, LG, Motorola, or any other brand are apparently out of luck.

OnePlus to launch smart TV, set for 2019 release window

Update, September 17, 2018 (02:20PM EST): Word broke earlier today that OnePlus plans to bring a OnePlus-branded television to market in 2019. Now, via an interview with Pete Lau conducted by PCMag, we have some more information on the upcoming TV. In the interview, Lau makes it clear that the OnePlus TV will be a 4K LED model. It will also run an operating system from “a big, mainstream provider,” but Lau declined to elaborate.

The very first mobile phone call explored in new book

TL;DR Martin Cooper, who made the first mobile phone call in 1973, just published a book about that historic event. The book chronicles the development of the first mobile phone and the rivalry between Motorola and AT&T. On April 3, 1973, Motorola employee Martin Cooper held a wireless box to his ear and used it to talk with a man about three miles away. While this seems like nothing extraordinary today, at the time it was a revelation.

Google Assistant and Home add new connected device support

Now that the Google Assistant digital AI is available on more Android phones, Google is also expanding its reach to include support for more connected devices. That also means those devices can be used with commands given via the Assistant-based Google Home smart speaker. Huawei has a clever way of making big camera modules more useful

Huawei has filed a new design patent which shows an unspecified Mate series phone with a quad rear camera setup. What’s unusual about this patent is a new touch display surrounding the four rear cameras. If you recall, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro featured a circular “halo” ring around its camera setup. The new patent (h/t LetsGoDigital) shows that Huawei will convert this ring into a display that’ll respond to touches, clicks, and sliding gestures.
