The Oppo Reno 5 Pro is launching in India, and it is the first phone to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 Plus in the country. Oppo is striking a middle ground with the spec sheet here, and while the phone brings high-end performance with the Dimensity 1000 Plus chipset and 8GB of RAM, it balances it out with a 6.

Researchers warn of vast problems with Android VPN apps

There’s a misnomer about VPN networks and what they really do. Claims that they can make you “completely anonymous” online are almost always inaccurate, even if they may increase your privacy to some degree. Unfortunately, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), in partnership with the University of New South Wales and UC Berkley, have learned of greater issues than that. In CSIRO’s research paper ‘An Analysis of the Privacy and Security Risks of Android VPN Permission-enabled Apps,’ the team investigated 283 Android VPN apps to explore their impact on user privacy and security.

Google announces 30-day Google Fit challenge

The main component of the new campaign is the upcoming 30-day challenge. Starting January 1, the challenge nets you Heart Points from activities that you log or actively track with Google Fit. The app offers encouragement over the course of the month. Google also teamed up with 36 influencers from nine countries to show how they get their Heart Points. Moto Z2 Force is getting an update to enable Gigabit LTE on Verizon

The new “next big thing” for carriers to crow about is going to be Gigabit LTE service. Verizon has already announced plans to launch it later this year, while T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint have all announced or tested version as well. Gigabit LTE should bring unbelievably fast speeds, with download speeds reaching around 1 Gb/s and upload speeds up to 150 Mbps. To get those kinds of speeds, Verizon will use four carrier aggregation and leverage both licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

Qualcomm brings high-end features to four new mid-tier SoCs

Qualcomm has just announced four new SoCs in its mid-tier Snapdragon 600 and 400 ranges, which aim to bring high-end performance and functionality to lower cost products. Cortex-A72 powered Snapdragon 618 & 620 We’ll start with the biggest news. The new Snapdragon 618 and 620 are the first SoC’s to use ARM’s latest Cortex-A72 CPU core. The Cortex-A72 offers up to 3.5 times the peak performance of the last generation Cortex-A15 CPU and a 50 percent performance boost over the Cortex-A53.

Now, a new poster believed to be an official piece of marketing material from Samsung has leaked.

With Apple’s iPhone 5 just hours away from being unveiled, Steve Jobs: Resurrection takes a look at what would surely be a much more interesting event. With lines like “we switched the dock up arbitrarily, so I hope you like buying new accessories,” this parody is bound to hit fairly close to home for some. Please note that while this video is meant to be all in good fun, it could be considered offensive to some, and it is probably not the safest video for viewing at work.

unlocked LG G5 for just $300 on eBay

While we await the official reveal of the LG G6 in less than two weeks at the MWC 2017 trade show in Barcelona, Spain, you can get the older LG G5 for an excellent price on eBay. A retailer called QualityCellz is offering the unlocked 32GB version of the phone right now for $299.99. While it turned out not to be a big sales success, we though the LG G5 was an excellent phone when we reviewed it in April 2016.
